Adobe Photoshop Gimp
Not all of Arthur’s techniques are digital manipulations and many are tried and tested tips dating back to early
photography. Manipulating a photograph may sound wrong to a purist but, although digital enhancements are
fairly simple to do in modern software, the old darkroom techniques were able to produce similar results in
the hands of experts. Modifying pictures has gone on since the dawn of photography.
So on to Arthur’s tips to win you first prize in our own competition.
There are many standard techniques such as the “Rule of Thirds” which proposes that an image should be im-
agined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical
lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections.
Aligning a subject with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the composition than simply
placing the subject in the centre.
