The initial models are all spinning disk varieties and are in truth much bigger versions of the humble floppy disk. They are
cheap but all have an internal rotating magnetic disk and a moveable read/write head. Component wear is the main issue
with these but their shelf life is still very good. Not everything lasts forever.
A more recent development is the SSD or solid-state drive which is much more compact, has no moving parts and is much
faster. Again, these come in various capacities and the price is falling.
Finally, the latest kids on the block are the ultra-fast M2 devices that are appearing on the latest computers. They need a
modern motherboard to house them as well.
The M2 dives come in 2 guises – just to make things awkward and you have to have a motherboard that will house them.
