The following picture shows the internal memory structure of a typical computer. Memory can be volatile – loses its
data when the power is turned off. This would be the computer’s internal Random Access Memory (Ram) which con-
trols the operation of the computer and the fixed Read Only Memory (ROM) which is non-volatile and holds the BIOS
data.
The Read/Write devices are the secondary memory that hold all your program files and data etc can be housed inter-
nally or externally connected via a USB port. These are your typical Hard Drives.
The more permanent hard drive is the mainstay of pretty well all computers and they come in all shapes and sizes de-
pending on the requirements of the computer.
