When I bought the custom-built machine from Chillblast, I had hoped to future proof it for the foreseeable fu-
ture.

Installation requirements were as expected – an internet connection and a Microsoft account. Nothing unusual
there.

Here is the first stumbling block – you need one of the latest processors to run the operating system. Windows
users are now in the same boat as Apple fans, as Microsoft has made Windows 11’s hardware compatibility
much stricter. Unlike previous generations of the operating system, Windows 11 tacks on tougher security re-
quirements, like the presence of a Trusted Platform Module 2.0 and the ability to use Secure Boot. It also only
works on specific processors that cleared for the next era of Windows.

TPM 2.0 or Trusted Platform Module 2.0
TPM stands for Trusted Platform Module, and its job is to protect data used to authenticate the PC you are us-
ing. TPMs can actually be found in lots of different types of devices, but we'll focus on PCs here. The TPM can
also be used to maintain platform integrity, facilitate disk encryption, store password and certificates, the list
goes on.

Windows 11 places strict restrictions on which resource programs can access, and it will not install on a com-
puter without a TPM 2.0 chip on the mother board. With the module fitted the computer effectively cannot be
tampered with by an outsider. TPM, effectively spends its time checking that no unauthorised changes have
been made to the hardware or software.

It is possible to work round these limitations but at your peril and is it worth it?
