The WIFI was a puzzle. I checked the Bios and found that WIFI was on but still no recognition, which was
odd as we had a connection at the Bowls Club during the installation, the previous evening. It would not do
any software updates either.
When in doubt check the forums and in this case the Linux Mint Forum came up trumps and with a little bit of
code typed into the Terminal section (shades of DOS programming from the distant past), I was able to down-
load the Broadcom Wireless drivers and we were soon up and running. Next, I was able to update all my cur-
rent software. This took a while as it was from a new install.
So far, the only package that would not run was Stellarium, a real time photo-realistic sky generator. which
heavily graphic orientated and I guess the laptop’s hardware was not up to the job on the latest version. You
cannot have everything.
I now have a fully functioning pre stone age laptop with a new lease of life, running the latest version of Linux
Mint.
If you do have an old machine that is sitting there doing nothing, why not consider the Linux route. You may
be pleasantly surprised with the results, as I was.
Our thanks to Mick Sulley for the presentation and great advice.
