Last Month…
Melton Computer club members were invited to visit our local Radio Station “103 The Eye”
This was the club’s second visit and many years after the first. Below are the notes that Mick
Sulley kindly collated for us.
103TheEye
Attendees – Graham Rock, Alan Danbury, Mick Sulley
Patrick & Christine
Community radio
103FM, DAB+, on-line via various streaming services
Studio in Melton but broadcast from a farm in Ab Kettleby
Started around 1995 part time then from 2000 24 hours
Many presenters, mostly using home studios and streaming to main studio. All volunteers.
Also, portable studio in trailer, clam shell design for use at live events
Some funding from an EU grant prior to Brexit
Lockdown caused severe limitations on studio use – led to much more home studio use for pre-
senters
They have backup and in some cases two backups for everything as far as possible.
Pending switch to digital phone lines may be a problem!
Welcome Break services A46 Hickling sponsors traffic & travel news
Traffic news uses a feed from INRIX
Good FM reception in area from Leicester to Nottingham
They stop the music 10 seconds before the news time, play the intro and then the news. News lasts
2 minutes. News feed is provided by Sky, they pay £1k per year for that.
Newspaper feed from Readly
Patrick asked if one of us would do an interview, the other two took a step backwards so I did an
ad hoc interview about the club which will be broadcast on Sunday morning, so we can expect
hundreds of new members after that!
