Along with users being able to automatically blur and remove backgrounds from their family snaps, they
will also get the option to erase parts of a photo without needing a degree in Photoshop.
This update is called Generative Erase and, as Microsoft's demo shows, it looks pretty handy.
The firm has used an image of a dog on a lead to show off what's capable. With a few simple strokes of a
brush, the lead magically disappears with AI able to fill in the missing gaps. It can even cope with
reproducing fine details such as hair.
Microsoft's Photos app already included something called Spot Fix which offered basic ways to clean up
images but this upgrade takes editing up a notch.
"Our well-known Spot fix tool has received a boost with the help of AI and is now known as Generative
erase in the app," Microsoft said in a post on its blog."This feature allows you to fix and remove
distractions from your photos, like background objects or miscellaneous visual clutter. Compared to Spot
fix, Generative erase creates a more seamless and realistic result after objects are erased from the photo,
even when erasing large areas."
