Soon, Mick became aware of 3D printers and had to have one for himself. Coupled with his in-depth
knowledge of CAD programming, he was soon manufacturing all sorts of bits and bobs, Soon he was becom-
ing interested in designing and creating cut away models of Jet engines, motors and even life-like pilots to fit
into model aircraft. Many of his creations were on display showing the intricacy of detail that he was able to
achieve with the printer.
As marvellous as these creations were, there was something extremely special up Mick’s sleeve. Concealed under wraps
all evening, we were treated to a creation that had to be seen to believe. Ther in front of our eyes was a working model of
Stephenson’s Rocket in all its glory.
Mick explained, to achieve this model, he spent many hours at the National Railway Museum in York, getting in every-
body’s way, collating and amassing measurement, photos and as much detail of the original as he was able. To say this
was a labour of love is an understatement and by his own volition became an obsession – meals and sleep often missed
in his quest. Look at the pictures and see what you think. Remember this is a working model and believe it or not, took
him only8 months to manufacture.
