Auto display text message scam
How it works
Bad guy takes out a short membership to a gym.
Goes into the changing room and takes a locker key.
Takes the key to the local key cutter to get a copy made
Takes the key back to the changing room and returns it.
Next day bad guy goes back to the gym and uses the copy key to open the locker. If he is in luck the locker
is in use and contains a wallet and phone, which he takes.
He uses the bank card details to try to log into the account, but does not have the password, so clicks on
‘forgotten password’. The bank sends a text message with a temporary password to the phone. The message
displays on the screen without having to unlock it, and he can use this to access the bank account and with-
draw money.
He can then put the wallet and phone back into the locker. It is unlikely that the owner will notice for a while.
How to prevent it
In phone setting you can determine whether text messages display or not. Much safer to not display them.
