Servers are mostly intended for 19 inch rack mounting (although there are tower servers as well,
just like a standard desktop machine). Here is a pic of 4 cabinets with multiple servers and other
equipment.
That is NOT what I have :)
What do I have now?
As I said earlier I have had a few hiccups and recently decided to look at getting a ‘proper’ server.
After a lot of investigation what I have bought is a Dell PowerEdge R320 server. Looking at the
Dell website a new one of similar (but more up to date) spec would be in the region of £1,300.00
plus £240.00 for the hard drive. I bought mine refurbished from ETB Technologies, via eBay, for
£204.00 including the hard drive. Bargain!!
Spec -
· 1 x Intel E5-2420 Xeon Six-Core 1.9GHz CPU
· 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 RAM – error correcting
· 1 x 4TB 7.2k SATA 3.5" 6Gbps Dell Enterprise Class Hot-Swap Hard Drive (bays for 4)
· Dual power supplies – hot swappable
· Dual network connections
· No operating system
Which is all pretty good, although dual power supplies and dual network are a bit unnecessary for
me, but no disadvantage.
